Controlling The House Remotely
Let's say you wanted to check on the temperature at home, or when you were at work, or away on vacation. Or, you had a weekend house that you lent to guests, and they're not sure they remembered to turn off the heat or the air conditioning. With Z-Wave, it can be a snap.
For example, Steve's demo included the HomeAccess system by Hawking Technologies, which uses Z-Wave to communicate with home devices and appliances remotely. The HomeRemote system consists of a broadband gateway, security camera and modules that can comprise an entire home control system that can be controlled remotely!
In this case, Steve demonstrates how the HomeRemote system can check on and change the thermostat for maximum control over energy usage The thermostat he wants to communicate with is also Z-Wave enabled, in this case, a model by RCS which can speak Z-Wave with other electronic devices. When you "dial" up your thermostat from the cell phone, the HomeRemote gateway communicates wirelessly with the RCS thermostat, using Z-Wave. You can not only see where the temperature is, you can also change it.

The RCS TZ40 thermostat can react to Z-Wave commands, from inside or outside the home
The same concept that lets you control your thermostat remotely works for almost any electronics in or around your home! And Z-Wave can also do the job for you, automatically. An inexpensive Z-Wave enabled sensor, like a daylight sensor, could trigger the thermostat as well. Or lower an automatic shade when it's sunny, which would then trigger the lights, as well as the thermostat. Z-Wave can manage home energy consumption to whatever degree you choose, and it's both practical and affordable -- you can do it one room at a time or an entire home at once.
Stay tuned for more Z-Wave coverage on the air!
