Light+Building: Z-Wave for Home Control & Automation Draws Crowds

(May 5, 2010)
A standout at last month’s Light+Building Trade Fair in Germany, the Z-Wave Alliance drew big crowds to its demos featuring Z-Wave’s wireless solutions for home energy management and control. Demonstrating the convenient, cost-effective, and energy-saving benefits of Z-Wave devices, Alliance members reported high levels of awareness and enthusiasm among attendees.

“The huge number of visitors interested in home control solutions underscores the fact that this market is really on the rise in Europe,” said Raoul Wijgergangs, chairman of the Z-Wave Alliance.

In total, Light+Building attendance was up 8 percent from the previous show two years ago. This year, nearly half of the 180,000+ visitors attended for home control and building automation solutions, according to a survey carried out by show organizers.

“The local demand has reached a level similar to that in the USA,” said Mr. Wijgergangs. “By providing consumers with more than 360 interoperable devices for control of their home systems – lighting, heating, surveillance cameras, entertainment networks and more – Z-Wave technology is making dreams of the” smart home” an affordable reality here in Europe, the US, and elsewhere around the world.”

Interoperability: Technology that talks – and listens
Featured at the Light+Building show were Z-Wave Alliance members FAKRO, Flex-Control, Aeon Labs, QEES, Remotec, Fujikom, Pepper One, and There Corporation. These companies demonstrated innovative, interoperable products, including automated window shades, plug-and-play hubs for controlling thermostats and consumer electronics, door and window sensors, dimmer switches, remote control devices, data platforms for smart metering, as well as lighting automation and testing equipment for Z-Wave embedded devices.

“With the range of new and innovative solutions based on Z-Wave technology, we are in a great position in the European market,” said Mr. Wijgergangs. “In addition, our SMB and OEM customers are benefitting from the new home control boom in the mass markets.”

Z-Wave makes it easy to configure a fully functional, interoperable Home Area Network for home control, automation, and energy conservation. The integrated Z-Wave chip enables seamless interaction among all electronic systems and devices in the home. Z-Wave products are not only interoperable but also easy to install. Simple plug-and-play bridges create seamless communication between Z-Wave embedded devices and those of other protocols.

Generation Green: Z-Wave Solutions are environmentally friendly
The Z-Wave Alliance noted that some huge market brands of the telecommunications industry expressed special interest in Z-Wave’s environmentally friendly – or “green” – solutions for home control. In particular, energy-saving LED lamps with Z-Wave technology are energy efficient and offer automated configuration of different color spectra for provisioning the user’s desired “lighting atmosphere.” This is yet another example of how Z-Wave is leading a responsible path toward the affordable and fully connected smart home.
