Smart lighting refers to any lighting product that you can control via your smartphone. This can include light bulbs, light switches, dimmers, relays, plug-in modules, or outlets.
Smart lighting with Z-Wave allows you to remotely control your lights, turn them on, turn them off, dim them, brighten, or change the colors of them from your couch while using your smartphone or when outside of the home.
You can also create schedules for your smart lights to turn on at certain times, or even to turn on when your smart door lock is unlocked as you arrive home.
Smart lights allow you to truly control your smart home’s energy usage. No more worrying about if you left the lights on!
Smart switches
There are 2 types of smart switches on/off switches and dimmer switches.
On/off Smart Switches are basic on/off light switches that can be turned on/off at the switch, remotely, or via scene control.
Smart Dimmer Switches allow on/off/and dimming control at the switch, remotely, or via scene control. These will require wiring.
Plug-in modules
These modules simply plug into existing outlets within the home and can control whatever device is plugged into them, remotely.
Plug-In Modules come in the form of an appliance module, dimmer, or on/off module. Once a lamp or other device is plugged into this module, it can be dimmed or turned on/off with your phone, tablet, or computer via Z-Wave technology.
Relays
Relays are a little device that install behind a non-smart switch and make the switch smart.
A Smart Relay device comes as dimmer or on/off. The on/off relay installs behind a non-smart on/off light switch. The dimmer relay installs behind a non-smart dimmer switch.
Both of these allow you to control the light at the switch, remotely, or via scene control. This will require some wiring and we recommend this is for advanced users only.
Smart bulbs
Smart Bulbs are bulbs you can control individually.
Most Smart Bulbs are LED and you can get them in standard white or with the ability to change colors, turn on/off and dim. Please note that in order for these to be used properly, the light switch must remain on at all times to control the light remotely.
Smart outlets
There are 2 types of smart switches on/off switches and dimmerswitches.
A Smart Outlet/In Wall Outlet is also just referred to as an outlet or receptacle.
Smart Outlets are advanced items that requires replacing the existing outlet in the home. Typically one outlet will always be on (non Z-Wave), and the other outlet will be Z-Wave controllable on/off. When the outlet is "off" something that is plugged in, whatever is plugged into it, will not work. Using Z-Wave it will work, when the outlet is turned on.
